Saint Luke the Evangelist
We chose Saint Luke the Evangelist as our patron saint because his life reflects what we hope to live as a church: the Gospel spoken clearly, the healing of the whole person, and the beauty of holiness offered to God.

How We Chose Our Patron
As Father Gregory began this mission, he sought a bishop who loved Holy Tradition and understood the heart of a mission parish. In 2017, he was received into ROCOR with a blessing to establish a mission community in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
Input was offered on possible patrons, but Father Gregory hoped for a saint whose witness would welcome all people—beyond any single culture or background. In Saint Luke, we found that welcome.
Why Saint Luke?
Evangelist to All Peoples
Luke’s Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles show the Church crossing cultures with clarity and love.
His close work with Saint Paul reveals a mission that is ancient, faithful, and outward-looking.

Saint of Many Gifts
Luke is remembered as a physician, an evangelist, and, by tradition, the first iconographer. His life shows us that every gift is given for the glory of God.
At ELOMC, we seek to nurture those gifts through art and music, hospitality and teaching, service and prayer. Every good thing we offer finds its source in Christ.

Healing in Christ
Holy Orthodoxy heals the human person, both body and soul, through grace.
In an age marked by many ailments, Luke the physician reminds us that Christ heals the whole person. The Church, through worship and the sacraments, is where that healing is received and lived.

Luke in Relation to Paul: A Pattern for Us
We see Saint Paul as the image of fervent witness—prayerful, steadfast, carrying the Gospel outward. We see Saint Luke as the steady companion—clarifying, consoling, and binding up wounds. Together they show how a mission moves: truth preached, people accompanied, hearts healed.
At ELOMC, we seek to embody Luke’s role—walking with those who struggle, explaining the faith with patience, and keeping the lamp of prayer burning for the world.
Luke on the Road
This scene captures what we hope happens here each week. Luke recounts the journey to Emmaus, where the risen Christ walks alongside two disciples, listening to their sorrow and opening the Scriptures to them. Though they do not recognize Him at first, their eyes are opened in the breaking of the bread, and they come to know the Lord who had been with them all along.
This is our hope for every visitor—that eventually all hearts burn for Christ, that Scripture is revealed, and Christ is recognized in the Eucharist.

How His Witness Shapes Us
- We teach plainly so the Gospel can be understood.
- We pray for healing of body and soul, trusting in Christ.
- We cultivate gifts—art, music, service, and study—as offerings to God.
- We welcome every seeker as a neighbor.
